Since sending voice traffic over a data network is like sending an e-mail, these calls are not subject to the same charges. The cost for voice over IP calls are charged at the same rate as the rest of the data. In other words, the more bandwidth the business requires the greater the cost.

Determining the appropriate PBX system is largely going to depend on how a company conducts business and the expected call volume. Having phone system hardware that can handle the expected demand is essential for any successful communication solution. Future growth should also be considered when purchasing a PBX system. If the call volume is expected to increase very quickly, it would be wise to allow for this additional volume in the initial purchase. If the business owner does not have personnel that are knowledgeable in the maintenance and troubleshooting of the PBX system, then it makes sense to purchase support provided by the PBX vendor. However, it is essential that a service level agreement be signed so that both the business and the vendor know what to expect and to establish an understanding of expected response time. Having a service level agreement ensures that the business owner can expect resolution to any outages within a reasonable amount of time.

As part of the installation of purchase process, the type of communication attached to the phone system should be discussed. In a virtual or hosted PBX system, this issue is resolved by the use of IP-based trunking and should be included in the quoted price. For an on-premise PBX, communication to the PBX can be set up in numerous ways. Consulting with a knowledgeable vendor will help to answer these questions. Since communications for an on-premise PBX are not included in the purchase and installation price, it's imperative that the business owner become aware of the cost of any solution that the PBX vendor might recommend.

Military Applications and Your GPS System

Drawn from the radio systems developed for World War II, the Commercial GPS so familiar to us today came directly from military applications. The GPS System solved major problems for the United States military leading to today's Military GPS.

During the Cold War it became apparent that the military needed the ability to locate positions of both enemy and military missiles and air planes. When Russia launched the first satellite into space, two scientists at the Applied Physics Laboratory began monitoring radio transmissions from the satellite. By observing the Doppler shift of the radio frequency during transmission to earth, they were able to calculate the actual position of the satellite when the transmission was made. Much to the surprise of Russia, a complete description of the orbits of the satellite was released by the United States. Russia was not able to calculate the orbit of its own spacecraft.

Carrying the idea further along, it was clear that monitoring positions in space or on earth was possible using satellites. The issue was the extensive cost to set up this technology. It was extensive enough that a private company could not bear such a cost. In stepped issues of the Cold War. The military had three issues and a GPS system would solve most of its problems. There was a need to know exactly where the submarine ballistic missiles, USAF strategic bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles were located. The development of Russian mobile intercontinental missiles pushed the envelope even more. Each military group had begun looking into the problem. Finally, in 1973 at a meeting at the Pentagon, combining forces of all the military units the Navstar-GPS System was born.

The satellites sent in to orbit were not only sent up with the ability to locate distances. Included were atomic clocks with the satellites that allowed both the position and the time of the location to be accessed. This allowed the GPS system to include timing functions. The GPS satellite system is still controlled and operated by the US military.

In 1983 after a Korean civilian plane was shot down by Russia after it strayed unknowingly into Russian air space, President Reagan authorized the GPS systems to be made available world wide to prevent similar incidents. The GPS system had signals sent on two different frequencies and controlled the frequencies sent out for civilian use. The accuracy of the Military GPS was within 65 feet anywhere on the planet; the accuracy of the civilian uses was accurate to 300 feet. In 1996, President Clinton issues a directive that ordered the Pentagon to cease controlling the civilian frequencies. This was stopped in the year 2000, leading to the GPS devices we have today.

Commercial GPS uses include clock synchronization, cellular telephony, vehicle tracking, person or animal tracking, fleet tracking, GPS tours, traffic light control, map making, navigation, aircraft tracking and pedometers.
