Consumer Power at Work in Femtocell Expansion

12 months ago there were only 9 deployments at the 2010 Mobile World Congress whereas globally there are now 19 of which half a dozen are business offerings.

This evolutionary trend suggests that operators are already looking beyond purely residential deployments despite the fact that there is still plenty of growth yet to come from that area alone. This pursuit of higher value commercial business seems to be manifesting itself not only in public places such as busy urban areas where femtocells provide an instant capacity boost but also in those rural areas where network coverage has historically been uneconomical. The latter could be particularly beneficial in sparsely populated developing countries.

The surge in femtocell deployments has been accompanied by significant technological improvements which are tending to ensure that the growth process is self-feeding. More powerful models with wider coverage are appearing all the time while new low power USB-connected femtocell designs promise to provide new service opportunities for operators.

In the wake of these developments, Informa expects the femtocell phenomenon to spread almost exponentially with annual sales capable of reaching 25 million in 2014. By then, nearly 50 million femtocell access points should be established with over 110 million mobile customers accessing their network via these small cells.

It is easy to see why it is in the interests of network operators for femto cells to become omnipresent. The relentless explosion in data traffic over the networks is pushing capacity to the limit so that anything that relieves this pressure with the minimum of cost has got to be welcomed with open arms. In the case of Vodafone, they are even managing to get their customers to pay £50 to buy their Sure Signal femtocell unit which diverts traffic away from the network and on to their broadband connection. The upside for the users is, of course, that they can enjoy 5 bar signal strength all the time regardless of where they are in the building.

Network operators have found to their cost that poor reception in domestic residences and smaller offices is one of the biggest factors in customer churn as users switch providers in the hope of gaining better coverage. Not only this but mobile service providers are always mindful of the fact that they are in constant competition with VOIP and fixed line services.

In fact, consumers themselves have confirmed in a recent survey that the quality of voice reception in the buildings where they live and work is the single most important criterion by which they judge individual network operators. Small wonder therefore that the same survey, conducted in 6 mature national markets, revealed that almost 60 percent of domestic users with a broadband connection would be interested in looking at a femtocell if it guaranteed continual 5 bar signal strength anywhere in the building where they lived. 4 out of 10 mobile customers considering switching providers could be persuaded to stay if femtocell technology solved their indoor reception problems while nearly a fifth would switch to a new provider who offered femtocells with their service.
